12th International Conference of ESAFS held in Nanjing, China
 
The 12th International Conference of the East and Southeast Asia Federation of Soil Science Societies (ESAFS) was held on September 18-21, 2015 in Nanjing, China. It was co-hosted by ESAFS, Soil Science Society of China (SSSC) and Institute of Soil Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences (ISSCAS).
 
About 300 participants from 21 countries and regions attended this conference, including Rainer Horn,the President of International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS) and Prof. of Kiel University Jae Yang, the Past President of IUSS and Prof. of Kangwon National University Yuji Niino, Land Management officer of the Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO-RAP) and Jianmin Zhou, the Honor President of Soil Science Society of China and Prof. of Nanjing Branch of Chinese Academy of Sciences.
 
The theme of this conference is “Rational Utilization of Soil Resources for Sustainable Development”. Five plenary lectures titled as “Soil Science Societies and Their Role for Improving Soil Governance at A Global Level”, “Sustainable Soil Management: Key to Conserve the Environment and Socio-economy of the Alpine Agriculture”, “Development of Soil Science in Japan: Past, Present, and Future”, “Hazardous Waste Site Regulation in Korea and Risk-based Cleanup Approach” and “Soil Database of China and Carbon Dynamics at Regional Scale” were respectively given by Rainer Horn (Germany), Jae Yang (South Korea), Kazuyuki Inubushi (Japan), Yun Sung Kim (South Korea), and Xuezheng Shi (China, Mainland).
 
On the nine group seminars themed respectively as “Asia Soil Informatics”, “Soil biogeochemical interfaces”, “Soil Fertility and Plant Nutrition”, “Soil Environment and Food Security”, “Green House Gas Emission in Land Use and Climate Change”, “High Yield of Rice and Sustainable Soil Utilization”, “Amelioration of Problematic Soils and Rational Utilization”, “Soil Ecological and Biological Processes and Effects” and “Research Frontiers on Microbiological and Biochemical Processes in Paddy Soil”, 78 oral presentations and 100 poster presentations were contributed. Twelve member societies also reported the activity of societies and research progress of soil science in their countries or regions.
 
More than 80 participants attended the field trip including the visit to the Liuyuan Garden in Suzhou, the visit to the Tangshan Emerald Valley Modern Agricultural Demonstration Garden, as well as the visit to the Soil Profile (Paddy Soil).
 
On the conference, Prof. Jae Yang was elected as the medalist of the 5th ESAFS Award due to his distinguished work. The soil science societies from Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Mongolia and Nepal were approved as the new member societies of ESAFS. The next conference, 13th international conference of ESAFS will be held in Thailand on 2017.
 


The open ceremony of conference was chaired by Jianmin Zhou, the Honor President of Soil Science Society of China and Prof. of Nanjing Branch of Chinese Academy of Sciences, at which Rainer Horn,the President of International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS) and Prof. of Kiel University Jae Yang, the Past President of IUSS and Prof. of Kangwon National University Yuji Niino, Land Management officer of the Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO-RAP) gave welcome addresses.
